JUNE 2022

Nina, Otto & Mars were presented their awards at the recent Woodstock Union High School Senior Awards Night

Sherburne Academic Scholarship Winners

It's a tie! For the first time in the history of the club's 40+ year scholarship program, we have a tie for the annual Sherburne Academic Scholarship! This is based on the winners having the exact same weighted GPA (grade point average). Rather than splitting the $1000 award, because of your generous support of our club, we were able to award both students $1000 each. They have also both studied together since their preschool days at Killington Elementary School.

Nina Borzekowski is from Killington; was a College Board National Recognition Program awardee; a Woodstock Union High School Yoh Theatre Player; and will be majoring in Theater & Computer Science at Brandeis University.

Mars Sell is from Pittsfield; was a 2022 Original Poetry Winner from the Poetry Out Loud Program of the Vermont Arts Council; was the Founder & Editor of The Scribblers’ Review (a Woodstock Union H.S. Literary Magazine); and will be majoring in Gender & Women’s Studies at Smith College.

Pat Zack Community Service Award Winner

This award is presented to the Killington or Pittsfield high school senior who has demonstrated dedication to community service and volunteerism within our local community. The 2022 winner is Otto Nisimblat from Killington and he also attended Killington Elementary School with Nina & Mars! He was a member of the Woodstock Union High School Football, Alpine Skiing & Tennis Teams; served as the 2022 Woodstock Union High School Senior Class President; served as an Altar Server at Christ the King Church in Rutland; served as the Student Board Member of the Woodstock Endowment Association; and will be majoring in Business at Boston College.

Congratulations to these deserving winners who make our Greater Killington community very proud. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors!

Jo, Patti, Lisa, Janina & Linda made it to the Taftsville Covered Bridge!

Woodstock & Quechee Bike Ride

You are invited to join us for a Summer Bike Ride in Woodstock on the morning of Sunday June 12 beginning at 11 am (or a longer ride to Quechee beginning at 10 am). Please RSVP and choose which ride you prefer in the poll. There will be a tailgate following both rides at approximately noontime!

We will meet at the overflow/RV parking lot directly across the street from the main entrance to Billings Farm located at 69 Old River Rd. (off Route 12) in Woodstock.

Club President Janina Curtis will lead the short bike ride starting at this Billings Farm overflow parking lot. We will bike along Old River Road to the Taftsville covered bridge and back. This is a very scenic ride along the Ottauqueechee River, passing orchards, horse farms, and gentleman farms. The ride is half on paved roads, with the rest being hardpack dirt: total distance about 5 miles. There is a small hill on the paved section at the beginning of the ride, with the rest being relatively flat along the river. A dirt bike or hybrid is best, but a lot of people ride this with a road bike.

Club member Lisa Magliano will also lead a longer loop to Quechee for those interested in participating. If you plan on participating in the longer ride, please arrive at 10 am so that you can finish in time for the joint tailgate afterwards.

Donation proceeds (a suggested amount of $10 from GKWC members & $15 from guests) will go towards our scholarship & awards fund.

Please like & share this event on Facebook!

Please RSVP via Evite and vote in the poll as to which ride you would prefer (shorter or longer).

Gourmet Cooking Lesson & Early Dinner Fundraiser:

Join us for a fresh pasta & sauce cooking lesson followed by an early dinner in the private kitchen of Ted & Linda Fondulas of Odyssey Events in Bridgewater Corners on Friday November 12th at 1-4 pm.

Many of you will recall that Chef Ted and his wife Linda operated Hemingway’s, an award winning restaurant in Killington for many years. They will welcome you into their home, give you an apron, and put you to work! We will learn how to make two pastas & two sauces, and at the end of the class we will all sit down to a splendidly set table to enjoy the meal! This is BYOB, so you can sip a glass of wine as you cook or with dinner. If we are lucky, we may see a deer visit the pond as we enjoy our pastas!

This cooking class is limited to just 6 participants, so please RSVP below and send in your payment ASAP! If there is enough interest, we will repeat the class and try to hold it on a weekend at a later date.

The cost is $100 for club members only, payable to the Greater Killington Women’s Club. Due to the limited size, only current club members in good standing may participate. This is a wonderful opportunity to support the Club and learn from a local master chef right in his own kitchen!

The location is in Bridgewater Hill in Bridgewater Corners. Directions will be sent to those who RSVP. A car pool will also be organized. At this time, the class is restricted to fully vaccinated attendees. Please note that no shoes are allowed in their house.

GKWC Donates to KES Kids’ Kingdom

Killington Elementary School Kids’ Kingdom Fundraising Initiative is seeking to replace the school playground. The original project was done more than 30 years ago with some major repair work done about 11 years ago. Today, the design and construction of the Kingdom no longer meet the developmental and safety criteria for all KES students. The structure is deteriorating, and a band aid approach will no longer work on this dated, yet much loved Kids’ Kingdom.

KES received some rebuild funding from federal & state levels as well as money from a state non-profit for these types of projects. Additionally, PEAKS (Parents & Educators Aligned for Killington Students) recently launching a grassroots campaign to provide additional funding for the design and installation of the new Kids’ Kingdom outdoor play area. They were asking their Killington community members for support in their efforts to raise $36,200 to create a safe, enriching, and unique outdoor play and learning space with Kids’ Kingdom.

The Women’s Club was involved in funding the original Kids Kingdom 50 years ago, and also contributed several thousand dollars when repairs were made 11 years ago. According to the club's bylaws, the Board can authorize an expenditure of up to $400 without a membership vote. The Greater Killington Women's Club Board of Directors recently met and authorized a $400 donation on behalf of our members. This is a Kids’ Kingdom Bronze Donor Donation Tier level and the club will be included on a custom display on Kids’ Kingdom design and we will also be acknowledged in local publications and social media campaigns.

JUNE 2021

Join us for a Summer Bike Ride in Woodstock!

Please join us for a Summer Bike Ride in Woodstock this Saturday June 12 (rain date Sunday June 13) beginning at 11 am. There will be a tailgate gathering afterwards!

We will meet at the overflow/RV parking lot directly across the street from the main entrance to Billings Farm located at 69 Old River Rd. (off Route 12) in Woodstock.

The bike ride will start at this Billings Farm overflow parking lot.

The club is holding this fundraiser plant sale at the Killington Market parking lot on Friday May 28 & Saturday May 29 of Memorial Day Weekend from 9- 2 pm. We will be offering beautiful hanging flower baskets and hardy locally grown perennials.

Plop the plants into a recycled plastic pot, label them with a Sharpie, and bring them to the plant sale in the morning. Club member Nan Salamon asked us to share this community service opportunity with members. Her husband Andy works with the local Rutland County Habitat for Humanity. Another long time club member Pat Fowler also volunteers for this organization. In addition, the club has previously donated funds to this important local charity.

Habitat will soon be breaking ground for another home in Rutland County that serves low income families. They will be hosting special work days on this job site for specific groups (of any size) during the summer and fall. Andy is asking if the Greater Killington Women's Club would be interested in sending a volunteer team to help on this new project during the morning, usually from around 9 am to 1 pm. Members of the work group will be fully trained for job site safety and instructed on each person's assignment and also partnered with a Habitat Expert.

If club members are interested in learning more, please contact Andy Salamon at 422-9244 with any questions. If you are interested in participating on a special Greater Killington Women's Club work day this summer or fall, please contact club president Janina Curtis at 342-8661 so we can pick a mutually agreed upon date.

Join the Greater Killington Women's Club (GKWC) for a Private Tour of BAIRD FARM on Sunday afternoon October 18th from 1 - 2:30 pm. See how maple trees are tapped, syrup is made and then enjoy a tasting of their delicious organic maple syrup. Please note there are no public restrooms. Reminder: masks are required

The tour is primarily outside on the farm. After learning about the maple sugaring process we will then head back to the actual syrup boiling room which is very large, open, and airy. Afterwards there will be a tasting of the various grades of syrup, spiced cider to warm us up and opportunities to shop in their store.

Each attendee will receive a mini glass flask of their maple syrup as a gift. The suggested donation is $15 for GKWC members and $20 for guests. Proceeds will benefit the club's scholarship awards program. Please RSVP HERE.

Ag Film @Mission Farm

Club Board member Sue Durant wanted to share this upcoming documentary film screening about regenerative agriculture on Sunday afternoon October 18 from 4-7 pm at Mission Farm in Killington. Autumn Bike Ride Thanks

Thank you to our club board Programs leader Jane Johnson for organizing this great event. SEPTEMBER 2020

Join us for an Autumn Bike Ride!

You are invited to join us for a bike ride to celebrate autumn on the D&H Rail Trail in Castleton on the afternoon of Sunday October 4. This trail has been selected because it is very flat and scenic, and bike rentals are available nearby at The Village Spoke. It is a dirt/gravel trail so no skinny tires! The plan is to meet at the Castleton College GUEST parking lot at 1 PM. We will ride as far as people feel comfortable (it is 9 miles to Poultney) and then return to the parking lot. There will be hot spiced cider to warm us up, and each participant will receive a mum plant! The club is seeking a donation (suggested amount $15 from GKWC members and $20 from guests) as a contribution to our scholarship fund.

GPS location: 201-279 Main Street, Castleton VT 05735. $20 for 4 hour bike rental at: Village Spokes Bike Shop, 629 Main Street, Castleton (on the left before entering Castleton College Entrance). You may try to call if you like at: 802-683-6949. Please RSVP HERE.

Annual Meet Your Neighbor Night CANCELLED

Thank you to club member Cheryl Gormley for offering to host this year's annual gathering. Unfortunately due to the recent COVID breakout in Killington, the club board decided to cancel this event for the safety of club members and guests.

As it has been difficult to gather and stay in touch during the pandemic, the club is planning on putting together a directory of members with contact info only available to fellow club members. Please renew your membership if you have not done so already so we can reach out and invite you to participate in the publication.

BOUTIQUE EVENING OPTIONS

This is typically the time that we begin planning for our annual Boutique Evening fundraiser in November. In light of the current circumstances, the club board has decided not to host this annual gathering in person for the safety of club members, vendors and guests. However we still would like to plan a version of this fundraiser. Past vendors will be surveyed for their interest in either an online virtual auction or virtual raffle. Rather than working with an outside charity, the club board has decided that whatever the format it will benefit the club's scholarship program this year.

Paddling & S'mores Thanks!

Thank you to club board member Jane Johnson for being our gracious hostess for the fun "Paddle your Way" outing at Colton Pond in Killington. Thank you also to all who attended and renewed their dues or made donations to the club's scholarship program. Click HERE for the photo album of the event

APRIL 2020 UPDATE

GKWC "Virtual" Annual Meeting on Thursday 5/14/20

As anticipated, we will need to hold our 57th Annual Meeting "virtually" this year. As you know, it is scheduled for Thursday evening May 14, 2020 at 6:30 pm. The Annual Meeting will determine award disbursements, including our 2 scholarship/awards, and elect club officers. We will also be discussing the authorization of the purchase of liability insurance as well as directors & officers insurance. Please note that only club members current in their Fiscal Year 2019-2020 dues are eligible to participate.

We will be using Zoom conference calling which we previously used successfully for a board meeting. This is free to join and provides the option of doing so by either computer or phone. Current club members will recieve all the instructions via a separate email.

Following discussions during the Annual Meeting, members will be asked to vote on the 2020 disbursements. Approval will be required by at least a majority according to our bylaws. Since the meeting will be virtual, we will also be sending out voting ballots to all members to affirm in writing all the decisions made during this "virtual" meeting. Again only members in good standing will receive a ballot.

Thank you for your understanding and flexibility during this unprecedented time. The safety of our club members is paramount.

Community Help Suggestions

Our Board of Directors has been discussing ways our club can help the local community during this difficult time.

You can support the business community by doing takeout from these local restaurants from this LIST compiled by the Killington Pico Area Association. Another way to support them is to buy gift certificates. Many local restaurants are also providing meals for their staff and families during this crisis.

Some of our club members are affiliated with the Killington Food Cupboard at the United Church of Christ on Route 4. If you can donate non-perishable items or help volunteer, please contact either Nan or Jane.

The Church of Our Saviour is also collecting funds to support the local community in need. These funds will help with food, rent and gasoline. They have online giving for donations HERE or TEXT contributions to 833-962-2909. You can also give checks but please put ‘discretionary fund’ in the memo line and mail to P.O.Box 272 (316 Mission Farm Road), Killington VT 05751. If any GKWC members need assistance, or know of someone that does, please email [email protected] or call 802-422-9064.

Many of our local hospitality workers live in the surrounding towns of the Greater Killington region. Please also consider donating non-perishable items to these area food shelves, the Community Cupboard or BROC. If you need someone to pick up your donations, please contact our board member Katie.

If you have any other suggestions, please contact our club president Janina at 802-342-8661. She is also affiliated with the local Killington-Pico Rotary Club.

Secret Valentine's Day Project in Killington

Former club board member Jane Ramos of the Sherburne Memorial Library asked us to share info on the Valentine's Day Phantom project. They would like to replicate in Killington a similar project from Montpelier where a crew of folks put up paper hearts all over their downtown every year for Valentine's Day. The Montpelier project has their own Facebook page and it gets tons of publicity each year. It was always something Jane looked forward to all the years she lived there. She said the red hearts against the snow gave them just the push they needed to perk up a very cold month!

This year, Montpelier is trying to push the Valentine's Day Phantom Project statewide. Killington's Active Seniors Group are very excited at the prospect. The Vermont League of Cities & Towns (VLCT) is also very supportive and hopes to get pictures from all over the state. The project was mentioned at the last Killington Pico Area Association (KPAA) meeting and the Killington Mountain Resort was also excited about it.  Jane hopes that they will paint a huge heart on Superstar for the day!

The hearts are being duplicated at the library and Jane has a small group of folks that will be placing them. She believes the more people involved, the more successful this local project will be. The hearts will be placed on local businesses between midnight and 5 am on Friday February 14. Jane is hoping that some of the folks involved in the women's club might be willing to pitch in and help. Please contact her at the library if you are interested and available. Jane is hoping pictures from the first Killington Valentine's Day Phantom project will go viral this year!

Community Service Award Deadline 4/15/19!

One of the primary fundraising purposes of the club, ever since it's founding in 1963, is to help support local students, especially those seeking higher education. The club currently funds two award programs, the Sherburne Academic Scholarship (highest weighted GPA determined by the high school) and this Pat Zack Community Service Award (most volunteer hours). If you know of an eligible local student (Killington or Pittsfield resident) who has done a lot of service hours, the Community Service Award application form can be found on the club's website. Our scholarship committee will then review these applications (blindly i.e. without names being shown during the review). Thank you to Scholarship/Awards Chair Jennifer Iannantuoni and her committee for this valuable service.

The club is also considering expanding the scholarship/awards program to include a new award primarily for demonstrated financial need. An exploratory committee is being formed to review all the possible criteria. Club members who have volunteered to serve on this effort include Merisa Sherman, Jo McDonald & Beverly Anderson along with some interested board members Their first meeting is tentatively scheduled for Thursday evening April 25 at a location TBD. Please let us know if you are interesting in joining us. Their recommendations would then require the approval of the full club membership at the annual meeting in May. Thank you to former club president Anne Marie Blackman for sharing all the club history & background on the scholarship/awards program!

Calendar Project Volunteer Luncheon, Wed. Oct. 5 @Highridge Sports Center, noon:

The GKWC is embarking on a bold new fundraising project. We are seeking at least 12 brave souls willing to pose as "Calendar Girls" for a club calendar. Want to select your favorite month? Some months have already been selected but we are still seeking a few more volunteers or group photos from the same Killington organization. ONLY PARTICIPATING VOLUNTEERS ARE INVITED TO THIS LUNCHEON. The purpose of the meeting is to finalize all the monthly themes, costumes and dates for the photo shoots. Please RSVP to new club member Lizzie Carosh at [email protected] ASAP. She is heading up this project and providing refreshments for this luncheon meeting. Lizzie has also arranged complementary professional hair and makeup services for early October, and potentially at other times. Local photographer Barb Wood has also generously offered to take these tasteful monthly photos. Don't miss this unique opportunity to be infamous!

Into to Bunco, Thurs. Oct. 20 6:30 p.m.:

Bunco is a dice game, traditionally played with at least 12 players who are divided into 4 players at each table. Players change tables after every round so it is a very social game, often resulting in raucous outbursts! No skill is involved - it's all about rolling dice with the help of lady luck. We will learn how to play bunco and see if there is enough interest in holding another bunco night on a larger scale. As this is a member only event, members will receive an invitation separately with all the details.

Movie Night featuring "Calendar Girls", Thurs. Nov. 3 @Sherburne Library 6 pm:

Please join us for a FREE viewing of this inspirational comedy film about a women's club in England that comes up with a highly creative and successful fundraising project. There will also be time to mix and mingle before the film starts at 6:30 pm! Snacks and beverages will be provided however donations of soft drinks, popcorn and snacks are also appreciated.

    A Letter From The President

Happy New Year everyone! I hope each of you enjoyed time with family and friends over the holiday season.

As 2014 begins I reflect on what lies ahead and how I can be intentional about achieving my resolutions. I use January 1st as a chance to think about setting goals and include something that is silly as well as something that takes more planning. Last year, I wanted to brush my teeth longer, the silly/fun goal. My other goal was to be more physically flexible; this goal took more planning, more yoga and more stretching.  I feel mildly successful and will be carrying this goal over into 2014. I am not able to quite touch my hands to the ground in a forward fold yet but I bought my punch pass to Bikram yoga last week! My fun goal for 2014 is to include 2 SWC book club meetings. I have continued to find reasons to not be reading in my free time and setting my sights on 2014 book club will help me be more intentional with that free time.

What goals or resolutions do you have for 2014? How can our club support your resolutions? Our club was founded on the premise of Killington women gathering socially and connecting to our community. Our Ladies Night Out and upcoming January Party are great examples of our social connections.  We fundraise all season long through our holiday bake sale, special events as well as support local organizations like the the food shelf.  I hope to see you next Thursday for our holiday party - please remember to bring a canned good and yankee swap item.  I look forward to hearing your resolutions for 2014 and enjoying an evening out with friends.

    Happy 2014,
    Deanne Fitzpatrick
    SWC President

We hope that everyone is enjoying their summer and let's all hope for a sunny Thursday!

As they do every year, the Fire Department is seeking volunteers to donate salads, desserts and watermelon for the July 4th barbecue at the Recreation Center. Food can be dropped off the morning of the 4th to volunteers on site helping with set-up. If SWC members are available to help and support this event as they've done in the past, we know the Fire Department would greatly appreciate it.

Look forward to seeing you all on River Road for the festivities. Happy 4th!
